磨齿齿轮是以提高[[齿轮知识:齿轮ABC基础篇:齿轮的精度|齿轮精度]]和齿面光滑度为目的，运用齿轮[[齿轮知识:齿轮术语集:研磨齿轮|研磨]]机器对齿面进行研磨加工的一种齿轮。使用磨齿齿轮主要有以下目的：降低噪音和振动以提高静谧性，以及为传达大扭矩的强度提升和适应高速旋转等。

为了制造高强度、高精度的齿轮，通常在[[齿轮知识:齿轮ABC基础篇:齿轮的材料及热处理|热处理]]后对齿面的变形进行研磨、修正。 另外，为了制造更高精度的齿轮，一般不只是对齿面进行研磨，作为更早阶段的工序，根据需要还会进行内孔研磨、圆筒研磨、平面研磨等。 其实，以提高齿轮精度为目的的加工方法还有比如剃齿加工等。

一般情况下，磨齿齿轮是以降低噪音和振动为目的而使用的，一对齿轮当中，一个是磨齿的话，另一个一般也会使用磨齿齿轮。 但是，配对齿轮齿数相差较大时，考虑到成本和强度关系，也有不对大齿轮的齿进行研磨，而只对[[齿轮知识:齿轮术语集:小齿轮|小齿轮]]的齿进行研磨的例子。所以，可以根据实际情况进行选择有无齿面研磨。
